Quick answers

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out is by 12:00 PM. The front desk is staffed 24 hours, so late arrivals are never a problem. Just give us a heads-up if you'll arrive after 6:00 PM. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested, subject to availability.

What do I need at check-in?

Your passport (or, for Cuban residents, an official ID). Cuban lodging regulations require every guest to be registered, so the front desk records each guest's document details on arrival. The name on the reservation must match the lead guest's document.

Are taxes included in the price?

Yes. The total you see at checkout includes all taxes and fees: it's exactly what's charged. There are no booking fees or hidden charges.

How is my payment processed?

Unless your rate says otherwise, the full amount is charged at the time of booking, processed securely by PCI-DSS certified international payment providers on behalf of DMC S.R.L., the company operating La Maestranza. Your card details travel encrypted directly to the payment processor; we never see or store your full card number.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Unless your rate says otherwise, you can cancel up to 15 days before check-in for a full refund; closer than that, the full stay is charged. The policy shown for your rate before you pay is the one that governs your booking. If your plans shift, write to us as early as possible: where availability allows we'll try to move your dates. Full details are in the Terms of Service.

Is breakfast included?

Breakfast is made fresh at the house every morning, and guests praise it constantly. Unless your rate explicitly includes it, it's an optional extra charged separately: order it at the front desk when you arrive and they'll confirm the current price. If you'd rather eat out, there are wonderful restaurants and cafés serving breakfast within walking distance.

Can you arrange a taxi or airport transfer?

Yes. The front desk arranges taxis all the time, including airport pickups and drop-offs (the airport is about 30 minutes away). Write to us before you arrive or ask at reception.

What about Havana's power outages?

Our corner of Old Havana gets the countrywide planned power cuts less often than most of the capital, and the house has its own automatic backup power that keeps the essentials running through any blackout: lights, Wi-Fi, the fan and the bedside outlets. The backup doesn't power the air conditioning. If anything ever fails, the 24-hour front desk is right there to sort it out.

What about Wi-Fi and internet around the city?

The house has free Wi-Fi: just ask for the password at the front desk when you check in. For internet while you're out exploring, the best option is a Cuban SIM card with a data plan from ETECSA, the national telecom company. You can buy one right at the airport when you land, and the front desk can also point you to a nearby ETECSA office.

Do I need a visa or insurance to visit Cuba?

Most visitors need a Cuban tourist card (visa) and proof of medical travel insurance to enter Cuba. Requirements vary by nationality and airline, so check with your airline or the nearest Cuban consulate before you travel.

Should I bring cash?

Yes: plan on cash for your whole stay. Your booking is paid online at checkout, but credit and debit cards issued by foreign banks typically don't work in Cuba, so cash is essential once you're here. Bring enough USD for your day-to-day spending and any extras at the house.

Do I need to exchange money into Cuban pesos?

Often you won't: the exchange rate fluctuates significantly day to day, which is why most restaurants, stores and private businesses are happy to accept USD cash directly, usually at a fair rate. We can't exchange money at the house itself, but if you do want pesos, our receptionist will gladly connect you with a reliable exchange provider.
